“The opportunities I’ve been offered at Taylor Vinters since qualifying are vast.”

The 'Credit Crunch'-induced Great Recession of 2008 swept away a raft of employment opportunities. For people like Jo Eales, graduating with a first-class honours in Law with Management Studies, this was the worst time to be a graduate.

“I did well in my law degree but because of the economic crisis, most legal training contracts were being deferred,’ she explains. “I decided to take time out and work in industry so joined a multi-brand cosmetics company, working on the e-commerce side of the business.”

Working for two-years in cosmetics due to recession necessity, Jo's passion for the legal sector continued to burn brightly. In 2012, having applied for the Taylor Vinters trainee scheme while working in cosmetics, Jo joined the firm’s Commercial and Technology team.

Since qualifying in late 2014, Jo has worked with some of the largest and most well-known companies in the UK and across the world. Her responsibilities have included advising one of the world’s leading tyre manufacturers on trademarking in the UK and in the EU, and one of the UK’s largest adventure parks on brand protection in the UK and internationally.

“The opportunities I’ve been offered at Taylor Vinters since qualifying are vast,” she says. “Soon after, I was trusted to go on a six-month secondment to one of the firm’s biggest clients to help negotiate their supplier contracts as part of a large project the client was trying to roll out.

“I also got the chance to represent the firm at the annual International Trademark Association (INTA) trade mark conference in Barcelona where I met with our international clients and overseas lawyers.” Jo’s experience exemplifies Taylor Vinters’ mantra to recruits: trust plus autonomy equals opportunity and progression.

To help progress her career, Jo has had the support of Partner Patrick Farrant who leads the firm’s multidisciplinary Technology Group and mentor Louisa Dixon, Partner and Head of Taylor Vinters’ Brand Protection practice.

“From day one, I’ve worked alongside Louisa. She is a great role model who has taught me lot of technical skills from a trademark perspective as she is an expert in her field,” Jo says. “The support from Louisa as well as from other Partners and Senior Associates has been extremely valuable. They have all given me confidence in my ability by consistently giving me exposure to a wide variety of work but supporting me when I need it.”

Jo was appointed senior associate in May 2018, just four years after qualifying, achieving her promotion two years earlier than average.

“Ironically, I never thought about being a lawyer until I reached university, she recalls. “I was going to study sociology but switched courses during Freshers’ Week. After finishing my law degree, I was determined to see it through into practice despite the challenges of getting a training contract back in 2009,” Jo explains.

“The support I’ve received at Taylor Vinters has helped me to progress in a short space of time. The opportunities are there to drive your own career from a very early stage. I grabbed them with both hands and that’s enabled me to run with my own matters, build my own portfolio of clients and forge a career I’m really passionate about.

“Now, I love working with great clients and hearing about what they are doing in the world. I often read about projects we have been involved in, which have come to fruition and it’s great to be able to say, ‘I helped do that’,” she says.
